Best Native Bernie Memes + Art
It never ceases to amaze us how talented, funny and quick Indian Country can be when we get our hands on something that resonates with us. No one can argue that Native memes possess a universe of their own, and that they are pure gold. We’ve seen this time and time again, but think about Grogu / The Child / Baby Yoda. That thing spread like wildfire across Native Twitter, Instagram and Tik Tok.
Many of us, ourselves included, saw the sacred, or rather #sacrit-ness of that baby, not to mention he looked a lot like our own babies and the babies we’re so used to seeing and holding at family gatherings, events and at home!
This special kind of love we feel when something makes sense to us is beautiful. Watching Uncle / Grandfather Bernie memes freckle the internet in the last week and a half has been the uplift we needed to laugh and to feel seen. This is about the joy we get while sharing - which is such an integral part of our respective Nations and cultures.
This week we want to share with you some of our favorite memes and some pretty amazing artworks of Cheii (maternal grandfather in Navajo) Bernie from across Native social media, because like Baby Yoda, we all have relatives sitting in that folding chair, who look like Bernie, waiting for someone to bring them a mutton plate/a bowl of stew/a frybread/a blanket! A big shout-out to all those who created the below. Hope you like these as much as we do! ~ S.A. + Emma
