She / Her / Hers

Nancy Y. Kim is an artist based out of Bologna, Italy. She grew up the child of Korean immigrants in Michigan and now finds herself an immigrant in Italy. Her work draws from these experiences of otherness, foreignness, and identity, and codifies them into the elements of painting. Invoking the visual codes of science, examination, and disease, she examines how fear and xenophobia attaches the language surrounding foreign pathogens to foreign bodies/foreign peoples. The elements of her work emerge out of material exploration and a personal history while gently pulling references from broader cultural and socio-political vocabularies.

She graduated with a BA in International Relations from James Madison College at Michigan State University and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007). She has shown in the United States, Europe, and Mexico. She makes an “ottimo” kimchi at home in Bologna, her preferred “pop” is still Vernors Ginger Ale, and her soul is currently on sale for a boiling pot of Sundubu jjigae or a Detroit Coney dog. She is a Korean Italian “All-American Girl.”
