Join us as we embark on a literary journey through time, space, realities and possibilities!
Palabras' 'New Suns, Ancestral Seeds' book club will focus on books authored by BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) writers in the genre of speculative fiction. The definition of speculative fiction is debated in the literary world, here we are defining it as a literary genre encompassing any fiction with supernatural, fantastical, or futuristic elements.
Why read BIPOC Speculative Fiction?
This genre is a disruptor in the face of cultural erasure, doing so by centering BIPOC characters and placing them within alternative realities and futures that subvert dominant narratives and invent new ways for BIPOC to face down, and interpret present and past oppressions. This subgenre empowers BIPOC communities to discuss issues through the speculative fiction lens while helping these communities imagine the inclusive and liberated worlds wanted and needed now and for future generations.
The first book we will be reading is, Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction (Sun Tracks) by Grace L. Dillon
We read one book each month and meet up on the last Saturday of the month at noon at Palabras Bookstore to discuss it. Please sign up for the book club here.
